The Horatio Alger Associationseeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college educaton and a desire to contribute to society.  Submit an online applicaton at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships  The deadline is October 31, 2010.

 Michigan Tech's Leading Scholar Award program recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and scholarly achievements both in and outside of the classroom.  This scholarship is valued at full-time tuition, room and board, and a $1,000 stipend for each of four years provided renewal requirements are met.  Visit www.admissions.mtu.edu/scholars to download the application directions, teacher recommendation form and essay response assignment.  Submit completed materials by October 15, 2010.

The American Legion Department of Michiganannounce their scholarships:  Oratorical Scholarship, American Legion Baseball & Scholarship, Boys State - Samsung Scholarship, Student Trooper Program, Brewer & Wilson Scholarships, Eagel Scout of the Year.  Information on all scholarships can be found at:  www.michiganlegion.org

RARE EVERYDAY HEROES:  Eligible candidates are Michigah High School Seniors.  Students submit an original essay (one page, single spaced) about someone whom they consider to be an Everyday Hero because, through their life's work, they are making a difference for others.  These should be just "regular" people ... not celebrities.  Entries must be postmarked by December 1, 2010. Girls Basketball

The girls basketball teams will travel to Houghton on Monday, February 13.  They will then return home to take on West Iron County in their Massa Cure Benefit for Cancer Care game on Thursday, Febraury 16.  The girls will be wearing pink jerseys and having a bake sale to raise money for this cause.  Both nights JV game time is 5:45; Varsity at 7:20. 

Boy's Basketball

The JV and Varsity boys will travel to L'Anse on Tuesday, February 14 and then Jeffers on Thursday, February 21.  JV games begin at 5:45 with Varsity to follow at 7:20. 

Hockey

The Varsity hockey team will return home on Tuesday, February 14 to take on the Houghton Gremlins in their Massa-Cure Benefit for Cancer Care game on Tuesday, February 14 at 7:00 p.m.  Come support this fundraiser and cheer on the Kings.

They will then face Negaunee on Thursday, February 16 and Escanaba on Friday, February 17.  Both games begin at 7:00 p.m. Thursday's game has been designated Parent's Night.

The JV hockey team will  face off against Houghton on Thursday, February 16 at 4:15 p.m.
